Dear Editor: Riverside County News,
I want to share something real and deeply personal.
My friend Cecilia is facing an incredibly difficult situation right now. She has lived at her apartment for over five years and has always tried to do the right thing. When her sister became seriously ill and had nowhere else to go, Cecilia opened her home to her. She didn’t do it lightly—she did it out of love, responsibility, and family.
Instead of working with her, the apartment management has now told Cecilia she could be evicted for helping her sister. What makes this even harder to accept is that they refused to even allow her sister to apply to be added to the lease—no discussion, no flexibility, no compassion.
Because her sister needs care, Cecilia had to leave her job to be there for her. Now she’s struggling to keep up with rent and basic expenses, terrified of losing her home on top of everything else she’s already carrying. Her options are limited, her stress is heavy, and she’s doing her best not to break under it all.
This is someone who has been a long-term tenant, someone who didn’t break rules out of carelessness, but stepped up for family when it mattered most. No one should be forced to choose between helping a sick loved one and keeping a roof over their head.
I’m sharing this because sometimes good people need support, and asking for help is hard—especially when you’re already exhausted and scared. If you’re able to help in any way—resources, guidance, support, or even just sharing this—it would mean more than words can say. And if you can’t, even holding her in your thoughts matters.
Thank you for listening. Thank you for caring. And thank you for being human.
Will
